Eleven ways to recognize a device.

Read the identity scope, current access, returned evidence, strengths and limitations behind each score.

#01Device identity with live network and account-risk context

ShieldLabs

9.5/ 10

Editor’s ChoiceEnterprise-level functionality without enterprise pricing.

ShieldLabs recognizes returning devices and pairs Device ID with 300+ device and network signals, an explainable risk score and ready-made account-level abuse detection. Current device/network checks help expose masking and repeated activity that a cookie or stale IP blocklist can miss.

Best fit Teams protecting signup, login, free benefits and checkout that need device recognition and ready-made fraud context through self-serve access.

#05Device fingerprinting and network intelligence

IPQualityScore

8.1/ 10

IPQualityScore offers device fingerprinting alongside IP, proxy and fraud intelligence. Evaluate the device product and response contract directly; a free IP lookup does not establish access to browser identity at the same price.

Best fit Teams evaluating browser/device evidence alongside IP reputation and digital-risk enrichment.

#06Networked digital identity and risk decisioning

LexisNexis ThreatMetrix

8.0/ 10

ThreatMetrix joins digital identity, behavioral intelligence and network context in a risk-decision engine. Its evaluation is a broader identity and decisioning project rather than a direct substitute for a small client-only fingerprint library.

Best fit Organizations assessing networked digital identity and an operational fraud-decisioning program.

#07Browser identity and fake-account detection

Verisoul

7.9/ 10

Verisoul combines multiple fingerprints, probabilistic account matching and fake-account signals rather than presenting one binary Device ID as the entire result. Face Match, ID checks and phone verification are separate add-ons; browser recognition should be evaluated separately from any identity-verification step.

Best fit Teams focused on duplicate or fake accounts that need device relationships and optional verification paths.

#08Device identity, integrity and location context

Incognia

7.7/ 10

Incognia combines device recognition, environment integrity and location context for fraud prevention. Its current device-intelligence range includes web/browser checks as well as native mobile signals, so it should not be evaluated as a mobile-only product.

Best fit Teams protecting mobile apps and browser flows where device integrity, location behavior and account associations affect fraud decisions.

#09Device reputation and consortium risk

TransUnion TruValidate (iovation)

7.6/ 10

TruValidate Device Risk combines device recognition with reputation evidence across participating organizations. It fits buyers who need shared device history and operational fraud workflows rather than a self-hosted browser hash.

Best fit Fraud teams evaluating consortium device reputation, device-account associations and integration into an established decision process.

#10Device intelligence inside a fraud platform

Sift

7.5/ 10

Sift uses device evidence across its fraud platform and also documents a distinct Device Fingerprinting API. That API can expose device information and network context; access to another Sift scoring product should not be assumed to include it.

Best fit Fraud teams that need device investigation, outcome feedback and risk workflows alongside an existing Sift integration.

#11Self-hosted browser fingerprint library

FingerprintJS (open source)

7.3/ 10

FingerprintJS is an open-source client-side library that derives a visitor identifier from browser attributes. It is separate from Fingerprint’s hosted identification product: collecting a local identifier does not provide the hosted server matching or entitled Smart Signals.

Best fit Teams that want inspectable client collection and can own matching, integrity controls and maintenance.

FAQ

What is the best device fingerprinting tool?

ShieldLabs is Editor’s Choice for device recognition with current device/network intelligence, an explainable risk score and ready-made account-level abuse findings under self-serve access. Fingerprint is a close alternative for identification and platform-specific Smart Signals. Compare the required identity scope and product shape across all eleven reviews.

Does a device fingerprint survive cleared cookies and incognito?

A fingerprint-based Device ID can retain continuity beyond cookies, but the result depends on the product and available evidence. ShieldLabs describes recognition across sessions, cleared cookies and IP changes. Test cookie references, visitor references and device references separately, and evaluate private windows as their own case.

Why is server-side corroboration better than a client-side hash?

A client-side hash can be copied or edited by an untrusted client. A supported trusted retrieval or server-corroborated flow adds evidence and validation outside that client. It still needs to be bound to the correct account action and protected against replay.

Is there a free device fingerprinting tool?

ShieldLabs includes 5,000 free identifications. Fingerprint lists up to 1,000 monthly identification calls and a Pro Plus trial. Castle Free includes 5 US dollars of API usage, equivalent to 1,000 Risk API calls. FingerprintJS is a self-hosted MIT-licensed library with a different architecture and operating model.

Is a unique fingerprint the same as a good device identifier?

No. A unique string can still change when a known device returns or merge entities that should stay separate. Evaluate returning-device recall, false merges, split identities and missing results over a stated time window.

Can ad blockers or privacy browsers stop device fingerprinting?

They can restrict storage or exposed attributes, or prevent collection from loading. Record unavailable evidence separately and test the intended browser population. Server retrieval cannot reconstruct a client assessment that never ran.

Is device fingerprinting legal under GDPR and CCPA?

The answer depends on purpose, jurisdiction, collection and implementation. Device identifiers and access to terminal information can trigger data-protection and ePrivacy obligations; the EDPB’s technical-scope guidance includes fingerprinting. Evaluate applicable notice, lawful basis, consent or exemption, retention and user-rights requirements for the actual deployment.

Can I send confirmed fraud outcomes back to the vendor?

Some products document device labels or outcome-feedback workflows, while others return evidence for a customer-managed process. Sift has a device-labeling API. Verify the supported feedback contract and keep confirmed outcomes separate from risk predictions.

How much does device fingerprinting cost?

Compare included identifications, API calls, fraud checks and contracted users separately. ShieldLabs Starter costs 99 US dollars/month for 25,000 identifications; Fingerprint Pro Plus costs 99 US dollars/month for 20,000 calls; Castle Pro includes 200 US dollars of API usage. Self-hosted library costs include engineering and operations.

What counts as a device when analytics and fraud tools disagree?

The tools may count different entities: physical devices, browser profiles, cookies, visitors, sessions or accounts. Compare their documented scopes. Keep the returned references separate instead of forcing them into one user count.

Can you get one stable device ID without forcing a login?

An identification product can return a Device ID before login. A later authenticated account association is a separate step through the supported integration. A device identifier is not a verified person identity and does not guarantee recognition across every browser or native app.

Does a stable device ID make risk scoring better?

It can improve continuity for risk analysis by connecting repeated observations and account actions. Keep recognition quality separate from fraud outcomes: a familiar device can act abusively, and a new device can belong to a legitimate customer. ShieldLabs combines identity with current risk and ready-made account findings.

Which affordable device fingerprinting tool should a small team try first?

ShieldLabs offers 5,000 free identifications with device/network and account-risk context. Fingerprint and Castle provide small recurring free allowances; FingerprintJS is a self-hosted baseline. Compare the evidence and operating work as well as the free quota.
